THE BROWN BOWL:
A PROMENADE OF
SILVER CHARIOTS AND
SPACE SHIPS BOMB WHITTIER
California’s ban on cruising was lifted at the start of 2024—the community of Whittier celebrates on the same day the annual Rose Bowl takes place in Pasadena, CA.
It was a moment in history where a cultural practice was determined ‘legal’—it was a win for an oppressed community.
Folks celebrated with the loudest, most impractical, most obnoxious 4 wheeled chariots ever seen cruising. A pile of tin and aluminum flooded the streets—with exhausts loud enough to wash out the pain those in Pasadena never cared to think about.
Gold hoops bigger than hubcaps, flannels with more squares than windows on a ‘62 VW bus, eyelashes so big that two blinks challenged Santa Ana Winds, and a stride in step that yelled:
we wont die.
